"El mundo Gira, Aprende Distinto" UCEN

Project Focus:

Creative Direction

Year:

2023

Location :

Colombia - Chile

This animated series was developed by Lucy Animation Studio (Colombia) in collaboration with Estudio Pájaro (Chile), commissioned by Universidad Central de Chile UCEN (Chile Central University) as part of their institutional campaign “El Mundo Gira, Aprende Distinto” (The World Spins, Learn Differently). The campaign aimed to promote key social skills among students at the start of the academic year through three animated short films—independent in theme but unified in visual and conceptual language. As director, I led a team of 11 artists at Lucy Animation, overseeing all stages of the creative process—from conceptual development and pre-production to final animation and compositing. Estudio Pájaro co-directed the project, contributing the scripts, voiceovers, and musical composition, ensuring a narratively and emotionally rich audiovisual experience.

This short film reinterprets climate action not as a distant crisis, but as a familiar mirror. It portrays the silent accumulation of environmental impact and the moment when awareness becomes unavoidable. Transformation isn’t explosive—it’s relational. Change begins with observation, with understanding that the world responds to what we place into it. From the start, I approached the direction by crafting a symbolic rhythm through circular compositions and transitions that evoke ecological cycles. As Creative Director at Lucy Animation Studio, I led a fast-paced production without compromising the emotional sensitivity or conceptual clarity required by the campaign.

Critical Thinking – Intellectual Autonomy

In this story, a character steps out of the pre-established flow—not out of rebellion, but out of clarity. The turning point is a pause, a breath, a gaze beyond repetition. The short film is a visual metaphor for inner rupture: the decision to think for oneself, even when no one else does. It aligns perfectly with the campaign’s call to learn differently, to question inertia, and to find one’s own rhythm.

Directing this piece meant working with silence, space, and tension. Pulling back movement and allowing stillness to speak. From a leadership perspective, it required trusting in the emotional power of simplicity and guiding the team’s effort toward nuance and psychological pacing.

Diversity of Perspectives – Inclusion and Respect

The final piece offers a vision of difference as design—not as noise, but as structure. The characters move along different paths, not to converge, but to recognize each other in motion. The story suggests that true learning happens when perspectives coexist and interact, rather than when a single vision is imposed. Each artist contributed elements that echoed the theme: many voices, one shared rhythm.
As creative director, I guided the composition as a collective choreography, and the piece closes the series not with a resolution, but with a resonance.

Production Milestone:
The campaign achieved a record production pace of 26 seconds of final animation per week, covering all creative and technical stages—from visual and narrative development (concept art, storyboard, animatic) to production and post-production (frame-by-frame animation, motion graphics, and compositing). This pace was made possible by a distributed production model: the Lucy Animation Studio team—with collaborators across Latin America, the United States, and Asia—worked in close coordination with Estudio Pájaro in Chile, who led the relationship with the Central University of Chile (UCEN).

The project flowed through an asynchronous remote workflow, grounded in clear creative direction, technical autonomy, and timezone synchronization.
